Down in Salabatpura, specifically at 1st Malini Wadi, Plot No. 4/e, you’ll find us. We’re right opposite the Bhanawala Apartment. Surat is a busy city for textiles, and our little corner is no exception. At Silky Centre Fashions, things can get pretty chaotic. There are usually bundles of fabric stacked up near the entrance and people running back and forth. It’s not the kind of place where you’ll find a clean showroom. It’s a working space. We spend a lot of time shouting over the noise of the street or the neighbors' machinery. My chair has a squeak that I keep meaning to fix, but I never get around to it. We drink tea at least four times a day, usually standing up because there’s nowhere to sit. Customers come in with samples and we try to match them up with what we’ve got in the warehouse. Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes we have to dig through piles for an hour. We don’t have a mission statement or anything like that. We just want to get the orders out on time and make sure the bills are paid. It’s dusty, it’s loud, and there’s always something that needs fixing, but it’s our life here in Surat. We wouldn't know what to do with ourselves if it was quiet, as there is always another shipment arriving or leaving.
