Mahalaxmi Traders

Finding us on Narsing Street in Sagarampura can be a bit of a puzzle if you aren't from this part of Surat. The street is narrow and 2/956 is tucked between some other shops that have been there forever. We deal with trading various goods, and the shop is usually filled to the ceiling with boxes and bags. There is barely enough room to walk sometimes when a new shipment comes in. We don't have a big glass storefront or a fancy display. People just come in, ask for what they need, and we pull it from the stacks. It gets quite hot in the afternoons, so we keep the door open to catch whatever breeze comes through the alley. The walls could use a fresh coat of paint, but nobody really has the time to move all the inventory out of the way. We’ve been in this neighborhood for a long time and we know most of the people who walk by every day. It’s a very local feel here. We drink a lot of chai and talk to the other shop owners while we wait for deliveries. The floor is old tile that’s been cracked in a few places from dropping heavy crates, but it doesn't bother anyone. We don't use any fancy computer systems for everything; a lot of it is still recorded in big ledgers with blue ink. It’s just a honest, busy trading spot in the heart of the city.
