If you’ve ever been stuck in traffic on Gaurav Path Road in Surat, you might have seen our place near Palanpur Gam. Savitri Yarns & Textiles is just a regular building filled with boxes and rolls of cloth. The area has changed a lot lately with more people moving in, but we’ve stayed pretty much the same. The floor is usually covered in little bits of thread and yarn. No matter how much we sweep, it always comes back by lunch. We deal with a lot of different people coming through the doors looking for specific types of yarn. Some days are quiet and we just organize the racks, but other days everyone wants something at the exact same time. It gets chaotic. My office is basically just a desk tucked into a corner behind some crates. I spend most of my time on the phone or checking the invoices. We don’t have a big reception area with fancy chairs. People usually just stand around and talk while they wait. The tea guy comes around twice a day and that’s when everyone takes a break. It is hot in Surat, so we have a couple of big fans that move the air around, but it doesn’t do much when the sun is hitting the roof. We just get through the day and try to keep the orders straight. It is just a local yarn shop trying to keep up.
