Lami International

Lami International is based in Surat, inside Kachiwala House. The exact location is 6/432, Pipla Sheri in Laldarwaja. This is an old part of the city. The lanes are very narrow, so trucks can't really get in here. We have to move everything by hand or on small carts to the main road. The building has been in the family for a long time. It’s got that old-fashioned architecture with a heavy front door. Inside, we use the ground floor for storage and the upper floors for the office work. We deal with international shipping, which means a lot of labels and customs forms. It can get confusing with all the different rules, but we’ve learned how to handle it over the years. The air is often thick with the smell of the market nearby. We start our day early before the sun gets too hot. Most of our time is spent checking weights and measures. We aren't a big corporation with hundreds of employees. It’s just a small group of us making sure the goods get to the port on time. We use a lot of tape and cardboard. The computers are old but they still work for what we need. Sometimes the internet is slow, so we just wait. We don't have any fancy brochures. We just do the work and talk to our clients on the phone every single day.
