We are located on Vasta Devdi Road in the Katargam area, right behind the Agrawal Dyeing Mill. This part of Surat is always buzzing with the loud sound of machinery and looms. P. I. Dawer Silk Mills is essentially a workshop where we spend all our hours among the weaving machines. It is very noisy and there is always a fine layer of lint on everything you touch. We do not have a fancy entrance or a lobby; you just walk in past the wooden crates. We have got a small group of workers who have been with us for many years now. Most of the time we are busy fixing broken threads or checking the machines for issues. It is not a glamorous job by any means. The heat from the motors makes the place get pretty warm, so we keep the big side doors open for whatever breeze comes through. We handle silk, so we have to be a bit more careful with the storage and the humidity. There is a lot of coming and going with the tempo drivers who pick up the finished goods for delivery. We do our own loading most days because it is faster. It is a very practical business. We do not spend money on decor because it just gets dusty anyway. We focus on getting the fabric right for the orders and keeping the machines running.
