If you know Surat, you know Ghod Dod Road is always moving. That’s where Jobanputra Thakobhai Desai is located. We’ve been part of this street’s landscape for quite some time now. Our office is a straightforward place. We don’t have any of those glass partitions or fancy receptionists. Usually, it’s just us surrounded by rolls of tracing paper and a few old chairs for guests. The windows look out onto the street, so we see the traffic jams and the rain coming down during monsoon. It gets pretty humid here, but the fans keep the air moving while we work on our plans. Most of the people who come in are regulars or folks who saw our sign while driving by. We spend a lot of time talking about plot sizes and floor heights. It isn't always exciting, but it’s what we do. Thakobhai has a way of doing things that’s very direct. We don’t waste much time on fluff. There is always a stack of files waiting to be submitted to the local authorities. Between the site visits and the drawing time, the day goes by pretty fast. Sometimes we stay late when a deadline is hovering, but we try to get home before the evening rush gets too bad. It’s just a regular office on a busy road, doing the work that needs doing for the city and the people who live here.
