You have to drive out about 27 kilometers on the Surat-Hazira Road to find us. It’s a long stretch of road and it can get really dusty with all the heavy tankers and trucks passing by all day. Essar Power Ltd. is out here because this is where the work is. It’s not like an office in the middle of the city where you can just walk out and find a cafe. We are surrounded by industrial plants and big infrastructure. Most of us have been working here for years and we’ve gotten used to the hum of the machinery in the background. It’s a 24-hour operation, so there is always someone on-site, even in the middle of the night. The weather out here gets incredibly hot in the summer, and the wind carries the smell of the sea and the factories. Our office is functional, mostly just metal desks and whiteboards covered in technical notes and shift rotations. We drink a lot of coffee to stay sharp. It’s a lot of responsibility making sure everything stays running without any hiccups. We don’t have much time for fancy presentations or corporate talk. We just focus on the gauges and the maintenance logs. If something breaks, we fix it as fast as we can. It’s a rugged kind of job, but someone has to do it. The commute home at the end of the shift is usually the quietest part of our day.
