Our workshop is located on Ashwanikumar Road in Surat, right across from the T. B. Hospital. It’s a busy street with plenty of people passing by all day long. At Avis Machines Pvt. Ltd., we spend our time building and fixing different types of machinery. The front door is usually kept open to let some air in, and you can see the lathes and drills from the sidewalk. It isn't a quiet place. There is always the sound of metal being cut or someone banging a part into place with a mallet. We have a small office space carved out in the back, but most of the real work happens on the floor. The walls are painted a dull color, and they’re covered with calendars and old technical drawings that we still refer to. We’ve been in this spot for years, so we know the neighbors and the local tea sellers pretty well. We don't spend money on fancy advertisements or polished brochures. Most of our work comes from people who know what we do and come back when they need another machine built. We just focus on getting the measurements right and making sure the parts fit together like they should. It’s a lot of manual labor, and our hands are usually dirty by lunch, but it’s a living that we’ve grown used to over time in this part of Surat.
