Ahmed Iron Store

If you're driving down Lucknow Road towards Goradarik, you'll see us near Senani Vihar. Ahmed Iron Store is basically a big yard full of metal. We have stacks of iron rods, some heavy sheets, and various bits of hardware. It’s a heavy business. We spend most of our time loading and unloading trucks that come in from the main suppliers. The ground is always a bit uneven and there’s the sound of metal clanging against metal all day long. It's not the kind of place you come to wear your best clothes. My shoes are usually ruined within a few months. We serve a lot of the local builders and people who are trying to put up a small house or a fence. We don’t do much fancy talking here. People come in, ask for the weight they need, and we get it loaded up. Sometimes the sun is really beating down on the yard and we have to take cover under the small tin roof of the office. We keep a ledger for the regular accounts, and it’s a bit of an old-school way of doing things. No big computers or digital screens, just a scale and some strong arms. It’s a simple life, dealing in iron and steel. We’ve been at shop number 143/1 for a long time now and we know the regulars.
