Muhammad Amin Beg And Sons has been a fixture in Gaw Kadal for a long time. We’re located quite close to Lal Chowk, so we’re right in the middle of everything that happens in Srinagar. Our shop is an old one. The floorboards creak a bit and the walls have seen better days, but it has a lot of history. This is a family business, passed down through the years. We do things the old way because that’s how we were taught. We don't use much technology besides a basic phone and maybe a calculator for the books. Most of our day is spent talking to people who walk in off the street. In the winter, we keep a small heater going and share tea with whoever stops by to escape the cold. It’s a slow-paced life compared to the big cities, but we like it that way. We aren't trying to expand or become some huge company. We just want to keep the name going and provide for our families. Sometimes the weather makes things difficult, or the roads get blocked, but we always manage to open up eventually. People know where to find us. We’ve seen the city change so much from our doorstep, but our little corner of Gaw Kadal stays pretty much the same. It’s just us, our stock, and the people who have been coming to us for generations. It feels right to keep the tradition alive.
