Bhat General Store

Bhat General Store is situated at Jamal Lada Chowk in the Nawa Bazar area of Srinagar. We are right at the main chowk, so everyone in the neighborhood passes by us at some point. It is an old part of town with narrow streets and lots of character. We sell the usual general items like sugar, salt, and other kitchen staples. The shop is quite old and the shelves are made of wood that has seen many years. Srinagar gets very cold in the winter, so we have to keep ourselves warm while waiting for customers. We aren't a big supermarket or anything. It's just a small corner shop. Most of the people who come here are our neighbors who have lived in Nawa Bazar for generations. We know them by name and they know us. It’s a very personal way of doing business. We don’t have any fancy computers, we just use a simple scale. Life here moves at its own pace. Some days are busy and some are very quiet when the snow falls. We just open the shop every morning and stay until it’s time for dinner. It’s a simple way to live and we’ve been doing it this way for a long time. There isn't much more to say about it. It's just a regular shop in a regular neighborhood where we belong.
