Down in New Mandi, Gharasana, things stay pretty busy, especially when the market is in full swing. Our place, Shubham Telecom, is right in the middle of all that action. It is not a very big shop, but we have managed to cram a lot into the space we have. There are rows of phone covers on the walls and a glass counter that has seen better days. During the day, the air is thick with the sound of tractors and people shouting over the prices of crops outside. It gets quite dusty too, so we are always wiping down the displays. We spend a lot of time helping people get their phones sorted or explaining how a certain recharge plan works. It’s a lot of talking and a lot of standing around. We don't have fancy air conditioning, just a couple of ceiling fans that do their best against the heat. In the evenings, the light gets soft over the mandi and things quiet down a bit, which is when we finally get to catch our breath. It’s an honest way to spend the day. We know most of the people who walk through the door by name because Gharasana is that kind of place. We don't try to be anything we aren't. It’s just a local telecom shop where you can get your phone fixed or buy a new SIM card without any trouble. It is just how we run things here.
