We are tucked away in Sarvapriya Vihar at number 1. It’s a nice part of New Delhi, a bit quieter than the main markets. The office is usually filled with rolls of paper and half-finished sketches pinned to the walls. We spend a lot of time staring at computer screens and talking about where a wall should go or how the light hits a room. It’s a small group of us here. We don’t wear suits unless we absolutely have to go to a big site meeting. Most days, it’s just jeans and shirts and a lot of pens that always seem to go missing. We’ve been working on designs for a long time, and we’ve learned that things never go exactly according to the first plan. There’s always a change or a new idea that comes up halfway through. Our desks are a mess of coffee mugs and rulers. We like the creative part of it, the part where you take an empty space and figure out how to make it useful. It’s not always easy, especially when deadlines are tight and the printer decides to jam. But we like being in this neighborhood. It feels like a good place to think. We just keep drawing and planning, trying to make things that look decent and work for the people using them. We often stay late, eating snacks and debating over floor plans until the lights outside go dim. It is just the way we work.
