The office and yard are over in Okhla Industrial Estate, Phase III, at number 31. If you’ve ever been to Okhla, you know it’s a bit of a maze of factories and trucks. We work with marble, so the whole place is covered in a fine layer of white dust. No matter how much we clean, it always comes back. We have large slabs of stone leaning against the walls, and the sound of the overhead crane is pretty much the background music of our day. It’s heavy work, and you have to be careful where you step. We have a small room in the front where we sit with the ledger and handle the paperwork. It’s got a couple of old chairs for when people come by to look at samples. Most of our customers are builders or people doing up their houses. They come in, walk around the slabs, and try to imagine how it would look on their floor. We just let them take their time. The Okhla sun can be pretty brutal in the afternoon, making the stone hot to the touch. We’ve been in this phase of the industrial estate for years. The crew is small, just a few people who know how to handle the marble without chipping it. It’s a lot of lifting and shifting, and by the end of the day, everyone is pretty tired. It's just honest work with stone.
