About Subhajit Leather Works – Gifts in South 24 Parganas
If you go to Sapgachi 1st Lane and look for 16B/1, you’ll find Subhajit Leather Works up on the first floor. It’s a bit of a climb up the stairs, especially when we are carrying heavy hides, but we’re used to it by now. The workshop is always full of the smell of leather and the sound of stitching machines. We don't have much in the way of air conditioning, so we keep the windows open to catch whatever breeze comes through the lane. It’s a local operation, and most of us live nearby. We don't spend money on fancy advertisements or shiny brochures. People usually find us because they heard about our work from someone else. Our worktables are scarred from years of cutting and prepping material, and the floor is never quite clean of leather dust. We don’t have a formal dress code; we just wear whatever is comfortable for a long day of manual work. Sometimes we stay late to finish a batch, and other times we finish early if the work is done. It’s a flexible way of living. We aren’t trying to change the world, just trying to get the leather goods ready and keep the shop running. It’s a bit cramped when we have a lot of stock, but we manage to find a way through the piles of leather. That’s just how it is here every day.
