Shankar Furniture

Our shop is right near the Ganguly Bagan bus stop on Raja S C Mullick Road. It's number 18 if you're looking for the sign. Shankar Furniture has been in Garia for a long time. The place is usually full of wood dust and the smell of polish, which I guess is what a furniture place should smell like. We have all sorts of things squeezed into the showroom, and sometimes it's a bit hard to walk around without bumping into a chair or a table leg. The guys in the back are always busy with their tools. It’s noisy, but it’s a good kind of noise. We don't have a website or fancy brochures. People just walk in after getting off the bus or if they live nearby. My father started this, and now I’m the one looking after the accounts and the customers. We don't try to be something we aren't. We just make and sell things that people need for their homes. Sometimes we run out of space and have to stack things up high. It's a bit messy, but we are honest about what we sell. If a piece of wood has a knot in it, we tell you. We don't like to overcomplicate things. Just simple furniture for regular folks. The traffic outside is always loud because of the main road, but once you step inside, it’s just us and the wood. It’s a small life but it’s ours.
