Vallalar School is tucked away in Singammalpuram. If you know Srivilliputtur, you know it’s a place that feels very traditional. Our school isn’t a huge modern complex, but it works for us. The building is solid and has been through many rainy seasons. We spend a lot of time just making sure the classrooms are ready for the morning. The kids come from all over the nearby streets, some walking and some on bicycles. You can hear the cycles clinking as they park them in the corner of the yard. Our classrooms have large windows because the heat can be a bit much in the afternoons. We use a lot of chalk here, and there’s always a bit of white dust on the teachers’ clothes by the end of the day. The playground isn't massive, but there’s enough room for everyone to run around for twenty minutes. Sometimes the neighbors’ cows wander near the gate, which is just how things are in this part of town. We don’t have a big fancy lobby. You just walk in and the principal’s room is right there on the left. We have old wooden cupboards filled with records and books. It’s a quiet place mostly, except when the kids are let out. We just try to get through the syllabus and make sure everyone gets their homework done before they head home to their families.
