Jain Mahim Halwa Wala

Down in Sadar Bazar, you will find Jain Mahim Halwa Wala. It’s not a big fancy place, just a traditional shop that has been around for as long as I can remember. We focus on making halwa the way it’s always been made in our family. The shop itself is quite small and tucked away among all the other businesses in the bazar. It gets very crowded in the narrow streets around here, especially on market days. You have to watch your step with all the carts and people moving about. Inside the shop, the smell of ghee is everywhere. We spend a lot of time standing over the heat, making sure the texture is just right. It is a slow process and you can't rush it. Sometimes the floor gets a little slippery, so we have to be careful. We don't have many employees, just a few family members and a couple of helpers who have been with us for years. We know our regulars and we know exactly what they want as soon as they walk in. We don't use any modern machines; everything is done by hand. It’s hard work and our backs usually ache by the end of the day. But this is what we do. Sadar Bazar is a noisy, busy place, but inside the shop, we just focus on the halwa. It’s a simple life and we are happy to be part of the history of this old market.
