Up here in Mount Abu, things move at a slightly different pace. We are located on Delwara Road, which most locals know well. It’s a scenic drive to get to us, though the roads can be a bit winding. The air is usually cooler here than down in the plains, which some of the patients seem to appreciate. The research side of things happens in the back, while the hospital part is right up front. We’ve been part of this landscape for a long time. It’s a practical building, built to handle the weather and the people who come to see us. Sometimes we get tourists stopping by if they have a mishap while visiting the sights, but mostly it’s the local families we see. Our desks are usually piled with folders and charts, as we still do a lot of things the old-fashioned way. It’s not a corporate setup; it’s more like a local fixture. The staff drinks tea together in the small breakroom when there’s a gap in the schedule. We know which floorboards creak and which windows get the most sun in the afternoon. It’s just our workplace, and we take care of it as best as we can. Every morning starts with opening the main doors and getting the lights on before the first group arrives. There is always work to be done, so we just get on with it.
