Bhawarlal Hiralal Mali is our family name and the shop is located in Halwai Bazar, Sheoganj. We have been in this spot for a couple of generations now. This area is famous for all the sweet shops, but we handle different things, mostly general supplies for the local people. The shop is quite old, with high ceilings and heavy wooden doors that we lock up at night. It feels nice and cool inside even when the sun is very hot outside. We do not have a big fancy sign, just the name painted on the outer wall. Halwai Bazar is always smelling like fried snacks and sugar. It often makes us feel hungry throughout the work day. We have a lot of regular customers who knew my father and grandfather. We still use the old manual weighing scales for some of the things we sell. It is a bit slower than the new digital ones but it is what we have always used. We keep all our ledger books written by hand. It takes some time to find certain things because we have so much stock tucked away in the back rooms. We don't bother with fancy window displays. People in Sheoganj know what we have and they come when they need it. We spend a lot of our time sitting on the platform in front of the shop. We talk to the other shopkeepers while we wait for the next customer. It is a quiet way of doing business.
