New Art Tailors

The shop is right here in Silvassa, not too far from the Post Office. If you are heading through the Tehsil-Dadra Nagar Haveli area, it is easy enough to find. It’s a small place, mostly filled with the sound of sewing machines humming and the snip of heavy scissors. There are piles of fabric everywhere you look. Some are bright cottons and others are heavier materials for suits. We have a couple of old mirrors on the walls so people can see how things fit. The lighting isn't the best, especially when the sun goes down, but we’ve got some bright bulbs over the work tables. I’ve been sitting at the same machine for years now, and it has its own little quirks. You have to kick the pedal just right to get it going. We don't really do anything fancy with the decor. There are some old calendars on the wall and a shelf full of different colored threads. It gets a bit hot in the afternoons, so we keep the front door open. People stop by to drop off repairs or to get measured for something new. We usually have a bit of a backlog, especially when there are local festivals or weddings coming up. The floor is always covered in tiny bits of thread and cloth scraps that we sweep up at the end of the night. It is just honest work, day in and day out, making sure the hems are straight.
