Choudhury Cane Craft

If you go down to Meherpur and look for the Old Post Office Lane, you will find Choudhury Cane Craft. It’s a quiet little spot away from the main traffic. The smell of cane is the first thing you notice when you walk in. We spend most of our time sitting on low stools, working with our hands. It’s a bit of a messy job with bits of fiber all over the floor, but that is how it goes. The lane is narrow, so big vehicles can't really get through, which keeps it peaceful. We make chairs, baskets, and all sorts of things out of cane. Sometimes people come in with an old piece that’s falling apart and ask if we can fix it. We usually can. There is no air conditioning here, just the breeze coming through the door and a small ceiling fan that clicks. We don't have a big website or a marketing department. We just have our tools and the materials that come in from the suppliers. Meherpur is a good place for this kind of work. People know us by name. It’s a slow kind of business, not like the big factories. We take our time and talk to anyone who wanders down the lane. It’s just how things are done here at the craft shop. It’s a humble place, but we keep busy enough.
