Down here in the Industrial Area of Mayapuri, things are always a bit greasy. Our shop, Shekh Battery House, is mostly full of heavy lead batteries and the smell of acid. It’s not the cleanest place to work, but that’s just how it is with this kind of stuff. We spend most of our time lifting batteries off trucks or putting them on the charging racks. My hands are usually stained with something that doesn’t come off easily. The floor is concrete and has a few cracks from where heavy stuff dropped over the years. We have some tools scattered on the workbench and a radio that plays in the background. Most of the people who come in are truck drivers or guys from the nearby factories who need a battery replaced or fixed up. It gets really hot in the summer because of all the metal around us. We don't have any fancy signs or a big lobby. It’s just a garage-style space where we get the job done. Sometimes we have to stay late if a driver is stuck on the road nearby. We just do what we can to help them get moving again. It’s a noisy area with all the machines running nearby, but we’re used to it. We just keep our heads down and handle the batteries one by one.
