If you drive along Jaipur Road, you’ll see our place. It’s a simple building where we do all the battery work. Most of the time, the air is thick with the sound of cars passing by at high speeds. We spend our days checking voltages and cleaning terminals. There’s a lot of heavy lifting involved because those big truck batteries aren't light at all. We have a couple of benches where we keep the chargers and the distilled water bottles. It’s not a very big shop, just enough room for us to move around without bumping into each other. We wear old clothes because the battery water tends to eat holes in everything eventually. It’s a practical kind of life. When a car pulls up with a dead engine, we grab the cables and go see what’s wrong. We don’t spend much on decorating or anything like that. The walls are mostly bare except for some tools hanging on hooks. People stop in because they’re in a hurry to get back on the road to the city. We try to work fast so they aren't waiting too long in the heat. It’s mostly just repetitive tasks, but it’s what we know how to do. At the end of the day, we lock up the shutters and head home, ready to do it all again tomorrow morning when the traffic starts up.
