Pawan Marbles

Our place is right on A. T. Road in Sivasagar. It’s been here for a good while now. Dealing with marble isn't as easy as it looks because those pieces are really heavy and they can break if you’re not careful. We spend a lot of time just organizing the stacks. The weather in Sivasagar can be a bit unpredictable, so we’re always making sure the rain doesn't get onto the polished surfaces too much. When a customer walks in, they usually want to see how the light hits the stone. We show them what we have in the back and out front. It’s a lot of walking back and forth. The floor of the shop is mostly covered in white dust from the stone edges. We don’t mind it. It’s part of the job. Most of us here have been working together for a long time. We know each other's habits. Lunch is usually a quick affair so we can get back to the loading. Sometimes a truck gets stuck in the traffic on A. T. Road, and we have to wait around. It gives us a chance to tidy up the smaller scraps. We don't throw much away because people always find a use for small pieces. It’s a steady kind of life. No two slabs ever look the same, which is the interesting part of it all.
