Down here in Sherkot, Bijnor, making brushes is what we have been doing for a long time at Tata Brush Co. The workshop is usually filled with the sounds of wood being drilled and the smell of the materials we use for the bristles. It is not a high-tech factory by any means. It is more of a traditional setup where we have a few machines and a lot of handwork. Some of our workers have been at these benches for many years. We make all kinds of brushes, from the ones used for painting houses to smaller ones for cleaning. Sherkot is known for this trade, so there are many people doing similar work nearby. We just focus on our own daily tasks. The floor gets covered in wood shavings and bits of fiber by the afternoon. We pack the finished brushes into cardboard boxes right here on the same tables where they were made. It gets a bit cramped when we have a large order ready to go out. Our building is old and the walls are a bit stained, but it serves us well. We do not have a big sign or a lobby for visitors. Usually, you can hear us working before you even see the door. We just keep making brushes one at a time, day after day, and that is our life here in Bijnor.
