Our workshop is situated right opposite the Senior School in the Khairabad area of Ramganj Mandi. Being across from the school means we hear the bell ring every day and see the kids heading home while we are in the middle of our work. We do stone polishing, which is a wet and messy job. There is always water running and the sound of the machines grinding away at the stone to make it smooth and shiny. It’s a lot of physical effort to get the finish just right. We work on all kinds of local stone that comes through Ramganj Mandi. The ground is usually wet, and we wear heavy boots to keep our feet dry. It’s not the kind of place where you want to wear nice clothes. We just focus on the pieces in front of us, making sure the rough edges are gone. Sometimes people from the village stop by to chat, or a teacher from the school pops over. We've been in Gaon Khairabad for a while, and everyone knows the sound of our polishers. It is simple work, but it takes a bit of a feel for the stone to know when it is done. We just keep our heads down and get the polishing finished so the stone can be sent off. It is noisy and damp work, but it pays the bills.
