Being out here at Village Awargani near Pench National Park means we are basically living in the forest every day. Village Machaan is part of the Village Resorts group but it feels more like a home for us who stay here year-round. My day usually starts before the sun is even up because that is when the safari jeeps start making noise in the distance. I check the gate and make sure the pathways are clear of leaves and branches that fall overnight. The animals are everywhere, so we always have to be careful when walking around. Sometimes we see deer right near the guest rooms in the early morning. It is a lot of work keeping a place like this running when the nearest big market is quite a long drive away. We grow some of our own vegetables in the back and the water comes from a borewell we dug several years ago. I spent most of last week fixing the roof of one of the huts because the monkeys had messed it up looking for food. People come here to see tigers but I tell them the forest is about more than just one animal. We have a small team from the local village and we all eat together in the staff kitchen. It gets very hot in the summer but the tall trees keep the rooms a bit cooler. It is a busy life during the tourist season but when the park closes, it gets silent.
