Eastern Iron & Hardware is over on Lala Temple Street in Ranigunj. The address is 4-4-182 502, right in the heart of the wholesale district. This place is always loud and dusty. If you aren't dodging a rickshaw, you're trying not to trip over a stack of metal pipes. Our shop is packed with all sorts of iron goods and hardware supplies. It’s a bit of a maze inside, and only a few of us really know where everything is kept. We don't have fancy displays or any of that modern retail look. It’s just shelves and bins full of heavy metal parts. My hands are usually stained with grease or rust by the end of the morning. We spend a lot of time weighing things out or cutting metal to size for people who stop by. The air in Ranigunj always smells a bit like diesel and old iron. We have some regular customers who have been coming to this street for decades. We don't use any fancy computer systems for everything; a lot of it is still done with a pen and a pad of paper. It gets very hot in the shop during the peak of summer, so we keep a big fan blowing just to move the air around. It’s a gritty, noisy life, but there’s something satisfying about handling real, heavy things every day and seeing the work get done.
