Akalad Mic School

Akalad Mic School is located at Plot No 14 in New Vasavi Nagar. Karkhana can be a busy area, but this particular spot in Vasavi Nagar is a bit quieter. The school is basically a converted house, so it has that lived-in feel. The rooms are different sizes. Some are big and some are quite cramped. We have the office near the front door where the principal sits with a big pile of folders. There’s a small garden area in the front, mostly just some potted plants and a bit of grass that struggles in the Hyderabad heat. The kids line up for the morning assembly in the driveway. It’s a tight fit, but we make it work. Every morning, you can hear the shuffle of feet on the stone floor. We use whiteboards mostly now, but there are still some old chalkboards tucked away in the back. The stairs are narrow, so we have to tell the kids to be careful every single day. Lunchtime is the best part of the day; the whole place smells like pickles and rice from all the boxes the kids bring. We don’t have much in the way of fancy equipment. It’s just the basics here. The teachers know most of the parents by their first names because they see them every day at the gate. It’s a small community school, really. Just a place where we do our work and the kids learn their ABCs.
