About Sky Granite – Building & Construction Material in Satara
Our business, Sky Granite, is located in the H-2 section of the M.I.D.C. industrial area. Working with stone is a heavy and dusty job, so the yard is always covered in a thin layer of grey powder from the cutting process. We have large slabs of granite leaned up against the walls, and you have to be careful where you walk so you don't trip over a stray piece of rock. The sound of the saws is a constant background noise during the day. It’s a tough environment, especially when it gets hot, because the stone holds the heat for a long time. We use a lot of water to keep the blades cool, so there are always puddles on the floor that we have to step around. Our small office is just a partitioned corner of the warehouse where we keep the invoices and the phone. It’s not a place for suits or polished shoes. Most of us wear heavy boots and clothes that we don’t mind getting dirty with stone dust. The M.I.D.C. area is full of similar workshops, so there’s always a sense of people just getting their work done. We load up the trucks manually or with the old forklift when it’s working right. It’s a lot of manual labor and watching the measurements closely. At the end of the day, we wash the dust off our hands and head home, leaving the stone slabs waiting for the next morning in the H-2 shed.
