Our tailoring shop is situated in Satara Jila, right near the local school. It is a good spot because we get to see all the kids and parents walking by every morning and afternoon. We spend most of our time bent over sewing machines or standing at the big wooden table with a piece of chalk and a measuring tape. The floor is usually covered in small scraps of fabric and loose threads that we sweep up at the end of the day. We do all sorts of work, from fixing torn pockets to sewing new shirts from scratch when someone brings us a nice piece of cloth. The machines have a constant rhythm to them, a sort of clicking and whirring that fills the room. It can get quite warm inside, especially when the iron is running all day for pressing the seams flat. We have a few old calendars on the walls and a radio that plays low in the background to keep us company while we work. People come to us because they know we will get the job done, even if it takes a couple of days longer than expected when we are busy. We don't use any fancy computer programs for our patterns; it is all done by hand and eye based on what we learned years ago. It is a simple trade, but it is what we know how to do. Sometimes the power goes out and we use the manual pedals.
