Mahadeo General Store

Mahadeo General Store is down in the Phalpatti area, right near the railway station. If you walk toward the station, you will see all the fruit sellers and the general mess of the market. That’s exactly where we are. It is a very lively part of town. We get a lot of people who are on their way to catch a train or coming home after traveling. Our shop sells a little bit of everything. We keep bags of rice, different types of spices, and small items like matches and candles. The floor is made of hard cement and has a few cracks in it from moving heavy sacks around over the years. It stays pretty busy from dawn until late at night. The smell of fresh fruit from the stalls outside always drifts in here. It’s a nice smell, mixed with the incense we light every morning. We don’t have a lot of help, so I’m usually behind the counter myself. My wife comes in the afternoon to give me a break so I can eat my lunch. We have a small stool for customers to sit on if they are tired. It’s not a fancy shop with air conditioning. We just have a big ceiling fan that wobbles a bit. We have known some of our customers for a long time. They tell us about their kids and their work. It’s more than just a shop to us; it’s our life.
