Nore-e-ealahi Swamill

The sawmill is situated at Sy No 101 on Balapur Road. We are in the Karmanghat area. You can smell the fresh sawdust before you even see the gate. It’s a scent I’ve grown very used to over the years. We take in logs and cut them down to whatever size is needed. It’s heavy work and the saws are very loud. We have to be careful every single day. The yard is usually full of wood piles and some scraps waiting to be moved. It isn't a very tidy place, but a sawmill never is. We use the space we have to keep the timber dry and ready. People from around Karmanghat come to us when they are building something new or fixing a roof. I spend a lot of time checking the blades and making sure everything is aligned. If the cut isn't straight, the wood is ruined. We don't have a fancy website or a marketing person. Most of our work comes from people just driving down Balapur Road and seeing the piles of wood. It’s an old-fashioned way of doing business, but it works for us. The sun can be quite hot in the yard, so we drink a lot of tea and keep moving. It is a basic job, cutting wood for the neighbors and the local builders, but it keeps the lights on. We just stay focused on the logs in front of us.
