Working near the Santaldih Power Plant means there is always something going on. Rakesh Mahato & Co. has been operating out of this spot for some time now. You can hear the hum of the plant in the background most of the time, and the air always feels like there’s work being done nearby. Our office is a simple place, nothing special to look at. We have a couple of old chairs for visitors and a calendar on the wall that’s usually a month behind. It gets busy here, especially with the trucks moving in and out of the Santaldih area. We spend most of our mornings just catching up on what happened the day before. The dust from the road covers everything if we don’t wipe it down every few hours. We don’t have a marketing team or anything like that. It’s just us, Rakesh and the rest of the crew, making sure the contracts and the supplies are sorted out. Some days are longer than others, especially when there’s a delay at the gate or the weather turns bad. We usually eat our lunch together in the small back room. It’s a practical way to run things, and we’ve gotten used to the rhythm of the power plant life. We aren’t looking to be the biggest company around, just to stay reliable and keep our neighbors happy. It’s a straightforward life here in Santaldih.
