We have been part of this market for generations. The shop isn't very large, but it is packed with history and goods from floor to ceiling. Most days, we are open before the sun is fully up to get a head start on the crowds. We do not use any fancy computers for everything; a lot of our accounts are still kept in big ledgers with pens. It is a family-run spot, so you will usually see a couple of us behind the counter chatting with long-time customers who have been coming to us for years. The noise from the street is constant—horns, people shouting, and the sound of carts being pushed along the narrow paths. We have gotten used to it and it feels like home. We sell a variety of items and we know where every single thing is kept, even if it looks like a mess to an outsider. There is no air conditioning here, just a couple of old ceiling fans that hum all day long. We take turns going out to get snacks or tea for everyone in the afternoon. It is a simple, honest way of living. We just keep doing what we have always done, day after day.
