Down at Plot Number 10 in Khoja Colony, you’ll find us most mornings before the sun gets too hot over Sahyadri Nagar. Padmini Industries is really just a bunch of us working with the machines and making sure things get made right. The shop floor is usually noisy, which is just how it is when you’re running this kind of equipment all day long. We have stuff piled up in the corners, mostly raw materials waiting to be processed or finished pieces ready to go out. It gets a bit cramped sometimes, but we’ve learned how to move around each other without getting in the way. People from the colony walk by and see the shutters up, hearing the metal clanking or the hum of the engines. It’s not a quiet place, that’s for sure. We don’t spend much time sitting in the office because there’s always something that needs looking at out back. My boots are usually scuffed and there’s always grease on the rags we keep by the door. We don’t have fancy uniforms or a lobby with chairs. We just have our workbenches and the tools we’ve used for years. Sometimes the delivery trucks have a hard time navigating the lane, but we manage to get things loaded up eventually. It’s a steady rhythm of making things, packing them, and starting all over again the next morning. It’s just what we do here and it keeps us all working hard.
