Our sugar business is based out in Shirdhon, specifically at gate number 518 B. That’s in the Kavathe Mahankal taluka of Sangli. This part of Maharashtra is big on sugarcane. You can see the fields stretching out for miles. When it’s crushing season, the whole area is buzzing. We have tractors and trucks coming in and out at all hours. It’s loud and it’s sticky. The smell of boiling juice is everywhere. We aren't a massive mill like some of the huge cooperatives, but we keep busy. Our workers come from the nearby villages in Sangli. It’s hard work, especially near the boilers. We spend a lot of time maintaining the machinery because if something breaks during the season, it’s a big problem. We don't have a fancy corporate office. Our office is just a small room near the gate where we keep the records. It’s dusty and there’s always someone coming in to talk about a delivery. We just focus on getting the sugar made and bagged up. The price of sugar goes up and down, so it’s always a bit of a gamble. But we’ve been doing this for a while now. We know the farmers and they know us. It’s a community thing as much as a business. We just try to keep the wheels turning and get through each season without too many mechanical breakdowns or delays.
