Bambu Candle Works

Down in Rotary Nagar Savali, near Post Tanang, things move a bit slower than in the big cities. That’s where you’ll find Bambu Candle Works. We started this because we wanted something to do with our hands instead of just sitting around. Our workshop is basically a part of the house that we converted a few years back. It’s got a lot of long tables and wooden racks for drying things. The smell of wax is pretty much permanent in the air here, and it follows us home too. We spend a lot of time experimenting with different shapes and seeing how things burn. It’s not an exact science for us; we just try things out and see what happens in the end. Sometimes a whole batch doesn't turn out right, and we just melt it all down and start the process over. We get our supplies delivered to the local post office or brought in by a small truck once a month. Everyone in Savali knows what we do because they can usually smell the scents coming from our open windows. We don't have a big staff of employees. It’s mostly family and a couple of neighbors who help out when we have a big order to finish. We spend our afternoons pouring and trimming the wicks. It’s quiet and peaceful work. We listen to the radio or talk about what’s happening in the village.
