Our mill, Shivakrupa Paraboiled Rice Milll, is located at 5210 in Medak. It’s a busy place, especially during the harvest months when everyone brings their paddy at once. Parboiling rice is a long process and the steam makes the air thick and warm inside the building. It’s hard work and your clothes usually end up smelling like damp grain by the end of the shift. We aren’t really into big advertisements or anything. Most people know where we are. The machinery is old but it still runs, though we have to fix the belts more often than we’d like. It’s just a few of us here making sure things move along. There is always a lot of water and heat involved in what we do. The trucks come and go from the main road, and there’s usually a pile of husks sitting out back. We don’t have a fancy waiting room, so people just hang out in the shade or talk near the gates while they wait for their turn. Medak is a good place to work, even if the summers get too hot for comfort. We just keep our heads down and keep the boilers going. If the grain is ready, we process it. It’s a straightforward business and we try not to overcomplicate things. The gate is usually open early in the morning and we stay until the last batch is finished. We usually have some tea around four to keep us going.
