Big Mart

If you are ever in Brajrajnagar, you probably know Gandhi Chowk. It’s the heart of the district, and that’s where Big Mart is located. Being near Lamptibahal means there is always a lot of foot traffic. Our store is basically a big room full of shelves that we spend way too much time restacking. People come in from all over Jharsuguda district to grab their essentials. It’s not like those shiny malls in the big cities; it’s a local mart where the floor gets a bit dusty when the wind blows from the road. We have a few staff members who help out with the billing and the heavy lifting. The morning is usually quiet, but by evening, the place gets packed with families. Sometimes the air conditioning struggles when the door is constantly opening and closing, but we manage. We have to keep an eye on the stock because things like milk and bread go fast. Working here means you see a lot of the same faces every day. We also have to handle the delivery bikes that park right in front of the shop, which sometimes blocks the path for others. It’s a lot of physical work, moving crates and checking labels. We try to keep things simple and not overcomplicate the way we run the mart. There is always a stray dog or two hanging around the entrance at Gandhi Chowk. It’s just how things are in this part of Odisha.
