Down here in Harpur Alowth, things move at a different pace than the big cities. Mithila Dudh Utpadak Sahkari Sangh Ltd. is basically a group of us working together. Our office is right by the post office, which is where everyone gathers anyway. Being a cooperative means there’s always someone coming in with news or just to drop off papers. We deal with a lot of milk producers from the surrounding fields. You can see the dust kicking up on the road when the tractors go by. It’s a very practical sort of place. We have some old wooden desks and a lot of ledgers because we like to keep track of things properly. It’s not a fancy glass building. It’s a solid place that smells a bit like the countryside and paper. The sun gets pretty hot in the afternoons, so we usually have the fans going full speed. Sometimes we sit outside on the steps and talk about the harvest or the weather. Everyone knows everyone else around here, so you can't really walk down the street without stopping five times to say hello. That’s just how Harpur Alowth is. We focus on the work at hand, making sure the dairy side of things is running as it should. It’s honest work, and it keeps the community connected. We’ve been at this for a long time and we really don't plan on changing much about how we do things.
