Vsn Hair Cutting Salon

Our shop, Vsn Hair Cutting Salon, is right on Siddhar Kovil Main Road out in Sivathapuram. Salem gets pretty hot in the summer, so we keep the windows open and the fan going full speed all day. It’s not a quiet place because of all the buses and lorries rattling past on the main road. We’ve got the usual setup here. A few chairs, a big shelf with different tonics and powders, and some photos of different styles on the wall that have been there since the nineties. Most of the men around here don't ask for anything too wild. They just want to look tidy. We spend a lot of time sweeping up hair. It's a never-ending job, really. Sometimes a neighbor stops by just to sit and chat for a bit even if they don't need a haircut. That’s just how it is in this part of town. We keep our tools in a small drawer and sharpen the razors on a leather strap. It's a sound you get used to after a few years. We don't have any assistants or anything, just us working the chairs. The light isn't the brightest in the back, but we know the angles well enough by now. If you're coming down from the temple area, you can't miss the blue board we have out front. It’s a basic place for a basic need that everyone has eventually.
