Perumal Chettiar Stores

The shop stays open pretty late most nights here at 5/3, V.K.Perumal Street. Perumal Chettiar Stores has been part of Kannankurichi for a good while, and most folks just drop by when they’ve forgotten something for dinner. It’s not a huge place, so things can get a bit cramped when we get a delivery of new stock. We spend a lot of time just moving boxes around and trying to find space on the shelves. Sometimes the fan makes a bit of a rattling noise, but we haven’t gotten around to fixing it yet. The street gets busy in the evenings with people coming home from work, and that’s usually when we’re the busiest. We just stand behind the counter, ringing things up and bagging them. It’s simple work, but it keeps us on our feet all day. There’s a cat that hangs around the back door sometimes, and we usually leave a bit of milk out for it. The inventory changes depending on what’s available, so we just sell what we have on hand. It’s a bit dusty on the top shelves because it’s hard to reach up there every day. We know most of the faces that walk through the door by now. It’s just a regular neighborhood shop where we try to keep the staples ready for whoever needs them. Nothing more to it than that, and we keep the floor swept as best we can.
