Shankar Rice & General Mill

You can find us on Sherpur Road. We are really close to the bus stand, so we see a lot of people coming and going all day. Shankar Rice & General Mill has been here for years. The mill itself is tucked back a little from the main road. We have a wide gate for the tractors. The noise of the buses pulling in and out is just background noise to us now. We work through the seasons. Some months are very quiet and we just do maintenance on the sifters and the hullers. Then harvest hits and we are working round the clock. We have a couple of dogs that hang around the yard; they keep an eye on things at night. The workers usually eat their lunch under the big tree near the entrance. It’s a bit of a local spot for them. We don't use any fancy marketing. The name is painted on the wall in blue letters, though it's fading a bit now. We handle rice and some other grains depending on what people bring in. It's a messy job, and your hair is always full of grain dust by the end of the shift. But it’s what we know how to do. We don't try to be something we aren't. We just run the mill and try to keep the equipment from rattling too much. It’s a simple life. We like being near the bus stand because there’s always a bit of life around.
