Malik Handicrafts is located in Kabir Market, right off Chilkana Road in the Islama Bad area of Khata Kheri. It’s a place where everyone knows everyone. Our shop is filled with the work of local hands. We have things stacked from the floor to the ceiling. It’s a bit tight in here, so you have to watch your step when you walk through the middle aisle. We spend our days talking to the carvers and the weavers who bring their items to us. There is always a pot of tea going in the back room. The market is very loud, especially on the weekends, with people haggling and rickshaws honking. We’ve been in this spot for a long time, and the wooden doors are starting to creak on their hinges. We don't mind. It feels solid and familiar. We don't have a website or any of that internet stuff. We just rely on the people who walk through the market. We spend a lot of time dusting the shelves because the road outside is quite dusty. It’s a never-ending job. We show the items to whoever comes in and tell them a bit about how they were made. It’s a very simple way of doing business. We aren't looking to expand into a giant warehouse or anything like that. This small space in Kabir Market is enough for us. It’s where we feel at home and comfortable. We just take it one day at a time and see who comes through the door.
