Sonia Handlooms

We are over at No. 72-L in Model Town, right near Tikona Park. The New Power House building is a good landmark if you’re trying to find us for the first time. We’ve been working with handlooms for a long time now. It’s the kind of work that takes patience because you can’t rush the weaving process. We have a lot of different fabrics piled up around the shop. It’s a bit of a mess sometimes, but we know where everything is. Model Town is a nice place to have a business, it feels more like a community than just a commercial area. We see the same faces every week. People come in to feel the fabric and talk about what they want to make. We don't have a fancy website or a big sales team. It’s just us and the looms. Sometimes the power goes out, which is why being near the Power House is a bit ironic, but we just wait it out. The textures of the hand-woven cloth are what keep people coming back. It’s not like the factory-made stuff you find in the big malls. We take pride in the fact that we still do things the old way, even if it takes longer. It’s just a simple life here, surrounded by threads and colors. We aren't looking to become famous, just to keep the traditional craft alive in our own way.
