Our shop is at Plot No. 253, right in the Mandi area. It’s a busy spot because the police station and the Gurudwara are both very close by. You can always hear the prayers or the sirens, depending on the time of day. Being in the Mandi means there is constant movement around us. Tractors, carts, and big trucks are always blocking the narrow lanes near our entrance. We do a lot of trading from this spot. Most of our day is spent talking to farmers or other traders who come in to settle their accounts. The office is simple, just a few chairs and a wooden desk where we keep the ledger books. We get a lot of dust from the grains and the road, so we are always sweeping the front step. Sometimes the traffic is so bad that people just walk over from the Gurudwara to say hello while they wait for the road to clear. We’ve been here at Plot 253 for a good long while now. It’s not the quietest place to work, but it’s where all the business happens in this part of town. We handle whatever comes our way, mostly just buying and selling what’s in season at the moment. It’s a lot of manual work and keeping track of numbers on scraps of paper before they finally go into the main book at night. We just keep at it, day in and day out, in the middle of all that noise.
