Our place is right across from the Indian Bank in Walajapet, on Thirumalai Street, No. 51. It’s a convenient spot because people can do their other banking and then just walk across the road to see us. We run a chit fund company, which basically means we help people pool their money together. It’s a system that’s worked for a long time around here. The office is usually humming with the sound of people talking. We don't have fancy air conditioning, just a couple of sturdy fans that we keep running all day. The floor is tile and it stays relatively cool. We know most of the people who come in because Walajapet isn't that big of a place. We spend a lot of time double-checking the numbers to make sure everything adds up. It's a lot of responsibility, but we've got a good rhythm going. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to use flashlights to finish the paperwork, but we don't mind much. It’s just how it goes sometimes. We aren't a big city firm with a thousand employees. It’s just a few of us trying to do a good job for our neighbors. If you’re ever near the bank, you can see us through the window working away.
