Sanju Stores

If you’re driving down Ashok Nagar Road in the Kadru area of Ranchi, you’ll find Sanju Stores near the petrol pump. Having the pump so close is actually quite helpful because people stop for gas and then realize they need a pack of cigarettes or some water or a snack for the road. The shop is pretty basic, just a shutter that I roll up every morning. Inside, it’s a bit dark, but I know exactly where everything is kept. I’ve got soaps, detergents, and all the kitchen staples like salt and sugar. The trucks going by can be a bit loud, and there’s always a bit of fumes from the petrol, but you stop noticing it after the first hour. I’ve got a small radio that I keep on to hear the news or some old songs while I’m waiting for customers. It’s a one-man show mostly, though my brother helps out if I have to go to the wholesale market to pick up more crates. We don't have a big fancy sign, just the name painted above the door. It’s 834002, and it’s a busy little corner. I try to stay open late because people often forget things they need for dinner and come running in at the last minute. It’s a simple business, but it keeps the family going and I like being my own boss in this part of town.
